John Carmack Says 120hz Will Be the New Default

John Carmack Says 120hz Will Be the New Default
September 6, 2022 by Colin Laurencelle

Meta’s Consulting CTO, John Carmack announced on Twitter that 120hz would soon become the default refresh rate for the Quest 2. The feature has been in its experimental phase since April 2021.

120 fps has been an "experimental feature" on Quest 2 for a long time, and we are finally going to make it default-on. Any app that plays 60 fps video should consider 120 fps display — it avoids the flicker of 60 fps display, and makes imperfect release tempo less harsh.

The Quest 2 was initially released with a default refresh rate of 72hz, with 90hz eventually becoming the default refresh rate for Oculus Home. Many developers started making a move to 90hz as it provided a smoother experience. Some games, such as Hyper Dash and Eleven Table Tennis made use of the 120hz experimental feature but not all games are able to perform well with such a high refresh rate.

Carmack also goes on to suggest that apps that play at 60 fps video should consider moving towards 120 fps stating that it makes “imperfect release tempo less harsh”
